Also I get better results when I put substrate in first and put a bowl to disperse the water . I didn't rinse my substrate" black tahitian moon" and water was not too cloudy very minor. Crystal clear in a couple hours

i suggest you not to re-cycle the complete water from tank A huge water change will help reduce the cloudiness so change the filter of tank as compare of changing the water through which the cloudy water will less and the bacteria in water in large quantity were still alive and on my side I will let the filter take care of the rest through which i feel the little bit improvement in cloudiness in tank

a filter sock is literally that, it looks like a windsock that you install in a sump and your overflows dump into it. they are available in fine micron sizes to pull particulates. since you probably dont have that on a 29 gallon, use filter floss in a high flow canister filter and clean it often until everything clears up.

My tank is still cloudy. It's silt. I have a mix of regular gravel and the kind for planted tanks. I thought I rinsed it enough but ... changed 25% of my water (29 gallon) today but that just stirred it up. What should I do? Floss???? What's a filter sock? :)

Decided the simplest thing to try would be a water change. I siphoned all the water in the tank and got excess dust/dirt that had settled in the substrate. I left the water in the sump so it was not a total loss of old water. Tank is significantly clearer. Before it was so murky you couldn't see more than a few inches into the tank, and now everything is 100% visible with a hazy look to the water. I will let the filter take care of the rest.

Its funny, when I started this hobby years ago I basically set my entire tank up and added fish the same day with no issues, and now I try to do things right and end up with more problems.

Purigen is a Beast !!!
Nix the charcoal . It really won't do much..if anything at all... for cloudy water . I personally would go the filter floss (quilt batting) route . Cheap and extremely effective.

Skip the charcoal. If you can get purigen, that'll work much better and you could keep it for prolonged use.
