I get discus from my friend in Houston and he import discus and very soon he will have new fish come in. On the PH I want low my PH to get 6 to 6.5 by peat moss ( Black water) will help your fish show full color and healthier and if later on my Discus breed the low PH will help egg have more change to hatch and grow . I know a lot hobby just keep Discus in tap water and they do just fine and so have fry too. so the low PH just me doing it for crazy thing what I do.

Nice, does your friend have a store or he is just an importer?
and yea I have a water softener helps lower the PH a little still 8 and the hardness comes down way down, Ive had mine breed successfully in my water.

With our high TDS in our tap, wood and even peat has a difficult time overcoming the buffering capacity in our water. Wood and other things are mentioned across the country, where most folks have far less then our 350+ ppm TDS water (I have even hit 500+ at times from our tap). In water that was closer to 150 ppm it is far easier for wood and such to impact the water chemistry via tannins. Mixing RO water (0-tds theoretically) will lower the general TDS even if mixed in ratio (50/50) or more and allow the wood's tannins to have a greater impact on the chemistry. These fish are from areas naturally with 0-10 ppm and thus the water has little buffering and the tannins can drop the Ph to 3-4. Below a 6.0 the nitrogen cycle breaks down and the water chemistry can get very weird though. Blackwater tanks operate differently and testing and water changes are different, so not for everyone. it is 175gal L shape and this tank original from Mrs Suelovefish in this group and my friend bought and give it to me.

How many gallons is that tank Hung?

Wood will slightly change the PH mine is 8. And I have a lot! Of Driftwood

Would like to share my L Shape Discus tank with you , it run for 5 day ago and my PH meet what I want to be is 6.0 hope get some fish tomorrow or next months

That gigantic drift wood will help lower the pH.

I will test the PH 2 time a week to see what happen . I will ley you know if some thing major PH change. . Also I use RO water for this tank.

Says it is like carbon and will have to be changed 4-6 weeks. Wonder if ro would be a better route

I use Peat moss in my filter . I work very well on the first day now day five the PH is still 6.0
