    Likely it uses F40 T12s or F32 T8s.

About all that will fit are 40 and 34 watts; pretty much foolproof. However ,you can choose colors ; cool white, etc.

Ok so per your comment above we know that the bulbs are 48". How big in diameter? This would help to identify T5, T8 or T12

Oh, don't worry, the fire department is great around here!....I live just a couple blocks away from you. My son tried the same experiment a few months ago. His light overheated and caught on fire, smoke detector came on and we called the fire department. I took the entire fixture, broke the glass lid of the tank it was on and stuck the entire fixture in the tank.....after we un-plugged it of course.

The fire department was there within, what seemed like, less than 5 minutes. So, don’t worry, even if you are not home and the fixture catches on fire, the fire department will most likely get to it before the entire house burns down.

What happens next depends on how good your local fire department is...

LOL! But it would prevent the ninja apocalypse... ninjas can't catch you where you're on fire!

Find out what the length of the fixture is and then buy a T12 bulb that matches the length. Shoplights like what you probably have take regular fluorescent bulbs and the wattage is standard by length.
