Unfortunately, I remember most of those.

I remember using the diatom filters. After an initial contamination in the tank with the diatom powder, the tank was crystal clear in 30 minutes.

Many years later, I had a swimming pool with a similar filter.

Funny thing is I forgot all of that. But I'm not old. I'm only 23 or I will be on my next birthday.

You know if you are old if:

1. You owned a Metaframe stainless steel tank with a slate bottom (I still own one).

2. You wanted to be Herbert Axelrod when you were young.

3. You remember the Silent Giant pump.

4. You remember when undergravel filters were first introduced.

5. The only two swordtails sold were brick and green.

6. You dreaded changing your box filter because of the spun glass floss would make you itch.

7. You remember that the kribensis was the most exotic South American cichlid.

8. Angelfish were either black and white striped or black (which was considered a separate species.

9. The only African cichids were the Mozambique and Egyptian mouthbreeders.

10. Arrowanas with yolk sacs were sold for less than $10.

11. The only frozen fish food sold was San Francisco Bay Brand.

12. The three big fish food suppliers were Tetramin, Yardley and Hartz Mountain.

13. Acclimating fish was floating the bag in your aquarium and releasing after 10 minutes (it scares me that some people may still do it this way).

14. Neons sold for less than 10 for a dollar.

15. You were fascinated when you saw on the cover of Tropical Fish Hobbyist the South American tribal native with the lip extension and body piercings (now a common practice in the USA) reading the magazine.

16. The only pleco available was the Hypostomus plecostomus.

17. Your local pet shops sold only freshwater fish.

18. All publications were in black and white.

19. You owned brass three-way and gang valves for multiple tanks.

20. Your fish hobby cost you less than $100 per year, even with multiple tanks.
