hobby has changed a lot in the 40 or so years. I remember when under gravel filters were in every tank. But the change is for the best. Eheim is still one of the best filters. IMO.
the live stock is biggest change with more to choose from. South American, African, and Asain. The scape, (sand, gravel, driftwood, live plants and rocks) are all something you will need to lookin to. To get what you like in the tank. It's your choice!

Gravel depends on the type of fish you plan on keeping. Purigen has pretty much made carbon obsolete.

Sounds like under gravel filter's are gone in carbon is next
I'm going to try to see where I can find some of that pool sand
The main fish I'm planning to do will be discus

Welcome back to the hobby! Undergravel filters are a bit outdated, and carbon is right behind them. If you're not set on gravel, check out pool filter sand. Its cheap, natural looking, and easy to clean

After many years of being out of the aquarium world I'm back. Had been waiting to finally settle down in a house that would have room for a tank. They didn't have internet back the last time I had a tank if that tells how long I have been out of the tank world.
I just got a used 175 GALLON OCEANIC BOW tank. It came with two pretty good size canister filters. Now I am getting ready to set it up.
Wondered if it would be recommended to do an under gravel filter system? If so any recommendations where to get one?
Also it came with pretty large gravel. Long time ago I had smaller gravel. I thought I used some kind of sand blasting gravel that was small and natural. Any recommendations for gravel would be nice too.
Thanks in advance for your time and help. Glad to be able to use internet and this forum to get answers for my tank and looking forward to getting our tank up and running
