needs plants. lol. i like the two piles but they still seem too orderly. too vertical. maybe some stone should lean a bit? they also look like they have been placed on the substrate. maybe get them in final position and then sprinkle substrate down the sides of the stones so that they look as though they erupted from the surface? you have done a better job addressing the depth issue. it must be hard to accomplish depth in a 12 inch deep aquarium with such large stones. planted tanks often do this by a severe slope in the substrate from front to back and also by creating terraces.

I like the latest scape better than the first two but there's still something I can't quite put my finger on...

I got the red schist from Alamo stone a while back. It was the last they had in a back corner on a disintegrating pallet. They had tons of green schist though. The red has a rust color to it, at least when it's out of water

NEPCO and Wayne's on Dixie Farm and 45 usually has some kind of schist rock. Call ahead of course
