Sand substrate in a high flow tank...

I have been thinking about doing this. It is why I haven't built anything yet lol...

I don't know if I would have to plumb it outside the tank or in the tank but it would take up more room...

Just power heads, or circ pumps too? Man... you need to go straight up Vortech for this tank.

true I am more thinking flow in one direction lol I am starting low and if I want more I will add more. I guess it is high flow to me the two tanks I have now don't have a lot of flow compared to what I am trying to do...

I am really liking the looks of the torpedo sand...

I personally am not too big of a fan of torpedo sand. I've seen it in a tank before and it just looked like someone had poured rice as a substrate.

I haven't decided on power heads yet. The pvc will either be .750" or 1" not sure yet... I have the tank dimensions and have it planned out in my head. Once I make up my mind on power heads I will draw it up in cad/cam and all that so I have a drawing to go off of.

For power heads I was thinking marineland 1200 not sure what other power heads are out there...

I had never come across river manifold tanks until you mentioned them here. I got almost an hour of interesting reading following that up. Have you started a build thread yet? If not, do you have your tank dimensions, pvc diameters and number and type of power heads selected yet?

Your tank isn't high flow to some of us on here. So really it comes down to what you want to look at everyday. Torpedo sand was mearly a suggestion, do what you wish.

I have seen some many river manifold tanks utilize larger river stones to break up the current and the sand seems to collect around them. I'd imagine that PFS or heavier would work well. Are you anticipating anything in the tank that moves through the sand or filters feeds from it? I imagine that would be your only limiting factor.

As an aside, I have seen some great work with swapping stones to an outdoor pond or tub to allow bio-film buildup and a readily available food source to graze from.

The only thing I am anticipating digging in the sand is the rhinogobius... I am planing to use 1" pvc so the power heads have good flow so I am going to need a lot of sand to hide them...

I am going to wait a while on the hill stream loaches so that the rocks have a good build up on them...
