DIY Carbon bottle ideas anyone?

    Now you guys have me thinking a little bit more..... A dangerous thing..

    John... What would happen if I were to use a 4 inch 5 foot long pbc tube that was threaded on both ends......

    One of the ends also had a 1.5 inch pvc pipe caped (cemented) and cemented onto the end... This PVC pipe would be the time that was used in a septic system and had predrill holes...

    The other end of the pvc pre drilled hole pipe would be capped with an flow through threaded adaptor to the other end of the 4 inch tube. So when the tube was threaded it would effectively allow a garden hose to be hooked up to flow into the pre drilled pipe.. The type of pipe that is used in leachfields

    When the setup is all put together and then packed with the carbon, the flow of the water would go out through the predrilled 1.5 inch tube into the carbon..

    The water would be forced out into a seperate opening that would be for the fish tank...

    I think the amount water exposure to the carbon would be for a great period of time without the extensive length and also would provide for greater effect.....

    Is that dumb?????

    I do not know about optimum eff. but if no chlorimine is coming out then that's optimum. 1 1/2" is proven to me. give it a try Bro! Call me and I will mail you some HACH total chlorine test reagents so you can feel confident

    With mine (pics above) if I have the kitchen faucet wide open the flow doesn't seem that fast. I packed my carbon with filter floss at both ends. This might have something to do with it. The next time I get it out, I will determine the flow and the velocity across the 2" section of pipe.

    It seems like it takes at least 10 minutes to get 35 gallons through mine which would be about 12 seconds of contact time but I will have to check. I don't know how much time is needed for carbon to work.

    I happened across this while looking for something else. Mine is made from 2" pvc pipe but otherwise pretty much like John's snake design. I also added an extra pvc bushing so that I can change out the carbon without cutting the pipe.

    I worry about the amount of contact time between water and carbon. I still use water conditioner as a precaution.

    It would work better with 1 1/2"pvc or 2" pvc. Don't use thin wall pvc(sch20) it will not glue tightley and it will leak. Use sch40 only. Also reduce down to 3/4 " on in-output. I reduced down to 1/2" and it slows the flow.

    Is 25 feet over kill???

    I made version of this with 1" pvc. I used 3ft sections x 4. Glued it.I made a hook out of couplings so it would hang on the pond. It works great. Would make a few changes on the next one though. But like Bill said it works. Pic coming.
