DIY battery back up?

not if you found a UPS like i did.... lol And im thinkin i can use a spare battery that i have for my wheelchair it seams like they stay charged 4 ever. and i spent $0 BUT thats just me.. i know that not everyone has a wheelchair ) err finds a UPS. I'm just sayin it would work and be a quick solution just off the top of my head ?

That would make for an expensive set up when a float charger and relay setup is but a few dollars.

Could you use a UPS to charge the deep cycle marine battery and as the switch when the power goes out?
Basicly route the system to use the deep cycle marine battery insted of the tiny battery that is in the UPS....

DD, Try it and report back on how long it last. Glen was going to try the same thing but never did it, I don't think. I would love to get a second person to try a UPS and see how it works. Again, as stated above it did not last long for my friend.

I have a apc 550 battery back up.and only have my fx5 hook up.when power goes out it kicks in for a hour .

I used a 2000w power inverter and an 18v truck battery for my battery backup.Any more ideas?

Does anyone here have a true battery back up that stays on 100% of the time and switches over to the battery power when lights are out?

Mikey, I think you'll be hard press to get one battery to run both those canisters for that long. All you really need is a converter. When lights go out plug up the canister to your car battery. Thats cheap and it gets the job done.

Only certain applications will need the power to stay on continously, i.e., reef tanks.

anyone selling any of these diy battery backups....i can purchase the car battery but i am an idoit and would just rather buy a plug and play...i want one that will run 2 fluval fx5s for about a week....thanks...

Should help short term for those that need the protection and don't got money for the vortech.

I just wanted to add here for those of you who don't much to spend or are looking for a last minute "quick fix". I bought 2 of these last year about 2 weeks before Ike hit. Along with it was a 24 pack of D batteries (Walmart, Costco, etc.) I wasn't at my apartment when the storm hit, but the good thing about these pumps is that they kick on once the power is cut off. Batteries lasted about 12-15 hours. I was without power for 15 days and these held up just fine.

Anyway, just my .02 cents, cheap alternative if you don't have time/money to rig up one of these DIY kits. Would be nice however.
