Whenever I clean my Eheim's, I rinse the Effisubstrat in aquarium water. All of the Mechanical Media, such as the blue foam or the Effemech Noddles, I rinse that in regular sink water, and then also rinse at the sink the canister casing.
I also take apart the impeller/motor and clean that area as well.
I always get a new Fine pad, and then rinse and re-use all the other media. If I have Chempure in the canister, I rinse it in aquarium water and replace it every 3-4 months.

With multiple filters on my tanks I don't bother with the extra precautions....I stage the cleanings and just rinse each filter with water hose pressure to everything clean.
If I buy 2 more 2217, each will cost me $128. 128 times 2 plus 30 for shipping = $286. Wow, 286 with everything ready to run. The difference is that I will have extra spreadbar and suction tube. I can live with that. 3 compact Mercedez parking around the 125 gallon 6 ft parking lot. Will 3 2217 manage the water better than one 2217 plus a 2260? worse than? or about the same?
What do you guys think? Is there any blind spot I, a newbie, overlooked? When I bought 2213 and 2217 I had stocked up a lot of fine pads and carbon pads. Per inventory cost control, maybe I should buy the same models so if oen broke, others can use the inventory items. Sound right?
In the long run, running three filters on a tank may have some pro's but as always, there are some cons as well, more electric power being used, possibly another surge protector needed, less room and more clutter under the tank ...etc....
But on the up side, two or three filters sharing the bio load might mean less filter maintenance time wise and provide a tank with no or very little dead zone.
It's a matter of personal choice again....you just gotta love that expression....."Personal choice"....it's up to you....only in america baby.
Vote Ron Paul if you would like to keep using that phrase.

Truth is the cement that holds the bricks and stones of a sane and civilized society together. Remove the former and the latter will crumble.
i don't think he gives eheim's ......
but he does give a whole new concept for the "constitution".....
vote for the "constitution champion".....that would be "Ron Paul".....
I would recommend going with a filter that has a larger baskets for you to add biological filtration into it.
You are looking to lower the amount of biological waste (ammonia and Nitrites, turning them into Nitrates).. If you go with 2217 they will come prepackaged for a setup that gives you a little of everything where having one large biological filter would do you much better in my opinion.

I keep a lot of filters. I have (3) 2217's in service, and hands down, (1) 2260 will filter and totally kick (2) or even (3) 2217's can all around town and back again.
You would be much happier with a 2260. 18L of media, verses 5-6L on (2) 2217's
The 2217 is 1L of Effiemech or a 1/2? I know it takes 2L of Effisubstrat.
