So I picked up a male kribensis and my females lit up like the fourth of July. There was a lot of dancing going on so if they start spawning, then the kribs are going to stay where they are. I also picked up two blue Mbuna which I think are Mainganos.
So I will probably put just the 4 zebs and 2 mainganos in the 55. How many other fish can I fit in there and what kinds? I think other melanochromis are ruled out because of the mainganos. I'm thinking a couple yellow labs. I might would put more but some websites say they max out at 8" while others say 4"? Any other suggestions?

I never had Kribs but i thought they were less aggressive then Mbunas. I know I used to have an OB that was mean as hell.

From what I have read and been told, these zebs are more peaceful than the normal zeb so I'll try it out when I have to time to watch them. Right now they're in a tank with my mean angelfish, a few giant emerald cories, and a couple black skirt tetras... nobody has come up missing yet... and I acclimate all my fish to regular tap water because I just don't want to mess with it...

I wouldnt....because mbunas are crazy....plus the ph ranges are off....technically the kribs and jewels come from similar waters but as stated before they are crazy too!!

I raised kribs for a few years and they can be pretty scrappy. I think they might do O.K. with the zebs if for no other reason than the zebs won't see them as serious competition...dunno.
Jewels are the antiChrist.
The few times I tried to keep them they murdered everything in the tank, including each other. Piranhas or full-grown peacock bass may survive with jewels but I ain't takin' any bets.

Mixing Kribensis and Mbuna?
Right now I have 4 zebra long pelvic in a tank waiting for me to finish setting up a 55 gallon.
In another tank I have 3 gold kribensis and 2 regular kribensis.
I'm considering putting these guys together in a 55 and adding 4 red jewels. From what I have read, the zebras and jewels should be fine together. I'm just worried about the kribs but they seem pretty feisty amongst themselves so I'm thinking maybe they'll be OK? I plan on siliconing in brackets so that I can divide the tank into three parts with eggcrate if I get three spawns at the same time. I also plan on trying out an experiment with coconut "holey rock" but thats a whole different thread all together. They will have plenty of caves though. Thoughts?Tags: None
