I would keep them in the 40 till they are all about 2-2.5, then put them in the 90.
From spit size (0.75"), they should reach 2.5 in less than 5 months** 1cm/month is the published growth rate of Tropheus

Mark,
I am only telling you from experience, that 6 months will be toon long for 20 guys in a 40 breeder, you'll end up regretting it.

See Mark? These guys decide when you get to have trophs. Not you!
I told you trophs are equipped with mind control properties. Now you guys believe me. Now, if I can just stop my climbing perch from giving me subliminal messages.

Mary Beth is my Queen. :)
Mark, first off, you made the right choice in getting the best FN fishes out there man. Secondly, I think the most important part is that you get the fish you want about 15-20 of them, and watch them grow. You will very very quickly outgrow that 40 breeder, and your fishes could be stunted.
You dont want that, so I would wait on 2 things.
When you got time and space for a 75 gallon, and the 20 fishes you want. Once you got them, they are yours. Your responsible for them.
You know Nick, how are those Sheepheads doing?
