  • The value of Flowerhorns

Just out of curiousity...if you set aside the arguments of what other people sell them for, whether stores or individuals, what makes these so valuable? With natural species it's a function of the ease of breeding, scarcity in the wild, shipping, etc. What is it that makes the value of these fish so high? Again...please don't use the argument of that's what others sell them for. Just wondering what makes these as valuable as a whole box (at cost) of wild caught tanganyikans.

It actually stems from a very interesting phenomenon that occurred back in the early 2000's. The marketing of this fish ignited a spark in Singapore and spread like wildfire across the world. Check this site out. It's the best explanation I've seen.

over rated in my opinion, but i think its because of all the line breeding they go through to create them. amphilophus, viejas, paratheraps, herichthys, and who know what else are constantly cross bred to create these. then there's "the head" or "KOK".

Wow. That is an interesting story. And it'd make an excellent horror movie, too!

Imagine: a flowerhorn turns evil. The black marks on its sides start spelling out instructions for the lonely guy that has it, taunting him and telling him what to do.

Imagine the possibilities! Someone get on it.
Trogdor was a man. Or maybe he was a dragon man. Or maybe he was just a dragon. But he was still TROGDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!

You know, fish are great. I love my fish. But what I really want is a monkey.

Perhaps originally, but then some foolish scientist (scientists are always foolish, if not stupid, in horror movies) would transfer it to America, where it will wreak havoc.

                  OR!

It starts out in its standard size, but someone in New York flushes it down the toilet and it mutates in the sewer system, including growing a labyrinth organ and becoming asexual, spawning thousands of bloodthirsty fry.

                  OR!

Exposed to radiation in Japan by unscrupulous scientists (those darn scientists again), it begins to grow and mutate until it becomes a Godzilla fish. Aside from destroying Tokyo (AGAIN... those guys never get a break), it destroys the economy when everyone plays the lotto numbers found on the creature and everyone wins. There will be screaming in the streets! There will be gnashing of teeth! There will be sequels!

This is good, people. Johnson, are you getting this?

i dont think there are many FH fans here. its kind of irritating that because of the FH craze you dont see Trimacs or Lyonsi around that much. most lfs wont even take my trimacs because they call them low grade flowerhorns.

Or have it appear in an episode of Ultraman or Ultra Galaxy, Japanese shows that feature giant monsters.
