  • Circulation pumps vs. Filter

If we use one of those powerhead circulation pumps and we have cycled our tank and provide plants, do we still need to use a filter?

If filters provide beneficial bacteria to break down compounds in your tank that are harmful, if we are able to supply that through a cycled tank and plants can we just use the circulation pump and scrap the filter? Or do we still need it?

Perhaps you could add a sponge to the powerhead for bacteria to colonize.

I think it should be possible, but you would need a well planted tank, and best not overstock it either.

Not a scenario that inspires warm fuzzies for me. I always filter my tanks, planted or not. In fact, most of my tanks have at least two filters.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

The filters provide mechanical filtratrion that water circulation will not provide.

Most of your bacteria colony lives on the glass anyway, and half that dies or gets exposed during water changes along the glass.

So, I wouldnt do it if I got fish in there.
