  • Fish Identification

What kind of fish is this? It is charcoal grey to black with blue/grey markings on top. He has grey and white markings on his mouth. He was labeled as a rainbow fish when I bought him about 4 months ago.

Hey Trish, the forum is a bit slow these days so you may have better luck (read timely) with the Greater Houston Aquatic Club group on Facebook

It looks like a shad. Wher did you get it out of curiosity?

Its a fathead minnow, the rosy red minnows sold as feeders are the same thing but with a genetic mutation that makes them red.
As for the white markings they are breeding tubercles they are used by the male during spawning. When pet stores get rosy red minnows there are normally a few that aren't red and that is what you have except yours is adult, normally when being sold as feeder fish they are still juveniles. yours is probably a feeder fish that managed to survive to adulthood without being sold and fed to someones oscar or other large fish.
