Timers have helped me a ton, really one of the best pieces of equipment we have added to every one of our tanks. Never turn a light on or off now

my morning ritual is turning the lights on and feeding the fish, then turning them off before bed. its been my habit so I didn't think I would really need a timer...then I go on vacation....live and learn

Well I had my mother take care of my tank while I was gone and forgot to mention to her to turn the hood lights off. I spent what little I had left of my vacation cleaning the 60g. Green water is close to being gone, still hazy though. Thinking of adding a uv filter in, something like the green machine in-tank unit. Any suggestions on uv sterilizers?
What happened? You left the light on while on vacation?

+1. I have timer on all of my tanks. Except that I go cheap with analog timers, so sometimes when power goes out, I have to re-calibrate it back on time.

Timer is a must for planted tank IMO. It consistently needs the light on and off at a certain length of time.

that's why I wanted to go digital, one that has a battery backup.

I hate my digital one honestly. The analog are soooo much easier to fix and mess with

Hit and miss really. I brought 3 GE digital from Home Depot for $20 each. Only 1 working now. The one still works is great.

they can get complicated especially when you get timers/time clocks that are packed with features for anything you can think of.

Sounds like you need 100% water change and leave the light off for couple days.

My digital timer can so 7 setting each day, but I really just need to have 2 setting: one in the morning and one at night when I'm looking at the fish.

the green is starting to recede...still gonna be a few days but I took some pics to compare yesterday and today. also on a good note my anacharis has been loving the water conditions and not stopping. its starting to look like an anacharis jungle, going to need a machete when I get around to trimming. Im noticing more and more ramshorn snails, getting nervous about them overrunning my tank. if it gets bad enough I may have to put my nerites and mystery snails in my daughters tank and get a few assassin snails for the 60g. I never had assassin snails and from what iv heard they will hunt down other snails indiscriminately, hate to do that to those nerites. amano shrimp were out in force this morning. they were hanging out ontop of my crashed helicopter ornament, good to see them active again.

I keep Nerites, Mystery Snails and Assassins in the same tank and never had any issues. Mine only prey on snails smaller then themselves
