looking to go canister eventually and wanted to get some reviews and tips on what you all use. So far looks like marineland canisters have some of the worst reviews

i had some hand me down cascade canisters that worked ok initially, but were old and their seals just started to go leaking everywhere. they were easy to prime, but i just tossed them eventually.

the canister i just got for my planted tank is an eheim 2211. the directions for setup are crap, but one simple youtube video and it was actually pretty easy and runs very quiet. the seal on the top is really strong too.

i think i will be slowly converting all my tanks to canisters and eheim gets my vote so far.

Eheim 2217 is perfect for a 60 gallon. For security I would also add a HOB like AC50 or AC70.

I'm currently using a marineland penguin 350 (350gph) hob and an aqua-tech (marineland) 20-40 hob togather in my 60g. They are keeping things fairly clean but filter cartridges get expensive. I found the Aqua-tech carts at Walmart for roughly $7-$8 for a box. They fit both my hobs. It's cheaper than getting a box of marinland carts at petsmart.

Found something interesting, those cheesy (well seems like to me) national geographic canister filters sold at petsmart apparently use eheim parts. Prolly the motors I would assume.
