The stainless is shiny but I like the Lilly glass. IMO> they are not that fragile. But it is your tank. So it should be what you like.

I agree the look of glass lily pipes is really nice...when they are clean. Dirty ones look sad. I am worried about keeping them clean and not breaking them. They are expensive to replace. Stainless look nice at ADG and should never break. Seems like a good deal?

Glass is fragile and hard to keep clean. Steel is sturdy and you can't tell when it's dirty

FINALLY got the tank up and running! The sand is Leslie's pool filter sand. The stainless steel pipes are imported from China. And the tank stand is a buffet cira 1920's. I just started a fishless cycle, so it will be at least a week before I can start adding the fish.

Very beautiful! I can't wait to see it all done with rams inside. I can already envision them squabbling over a particular rock or a branch, fins all raised and those jerky motions they make. They're so scary! Great Job!

I have had water in almost a week now. It has gotten cloudy and the wood has the nasty white film on it that is to be expected. I have been adding ammonia for a fishless cycle. After 30 minutes or so of circulation, I will get around 2 ppm ammonia. The next day, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and 0 nitrates. Is the wood absorbing ammonia? Is there something different to cycling a tank with wood that I missed? Or is this tank truly magical?

I used the stock media that came with the filter: EHFIMECH, blue coarse filter, Substratand fine filter (in that order). I left the carbon pad out.
