  • Aligator Gar Fry

I have been catching all sorts of interesting stuff behind my house in the water ways, especially when it rains like it has and everything is flooded. Yesterday I snagged what I believe are aligator gar fry. I've seen the adults before. I snagged two little fry that are probably under 1" in length. They are pretty cool looking and I will try and get some pictures up.

Sorry, I failed. I didn't have a dedicated space to put them in, and they aren't in there today. Next time, dedicated tank.
I tried to fish new ones out today but the flow is completely different. It has slowed down, nothing but guppy fry, crawfish, and pond snails. I might not have another chance again until possibly next year.

Google image search, they like this except only 2:

It happens. Big fish eat little fish. If you ever need to place to put something like this. Let us know. We have space.

I appreciate it Troy. The tank I put it in had alot of cover, but it wasn't enough. I could have easily released everything in the tank back into the stream, all the occupants are wild caught. Everything always seems clear in hindsight. If we get more rain, I might have another chance. I only see the species whenever there is a strong current. But I imagine they spawn upstream and the fry are already downstream now. I check everyday though, so if the conditions are right, then I might get another chance.

Where do you live in Richmond?
There are warnings about flooding along Brazos River yesterday.

You could use a breeder net in your tank or a bucket with a filter. I always have an empty tank. ready for what may come.
