  • Something bad happened to my guppy, please help!

I recently upgraded my tank from a 10 gallon to a 36 gallon bowfront tank. The water I use is from the tap and I also use api products to remove the chemicals. Yesterday I did a 50% water change and the fish all asked to love it as they were super active after I finished with it. I'm sure that the new tank is still cycling and the water is a bit cloudy right now.

About my guppy. The very first guppy I got is a blue boy with a nice tail that has always been beautiful. He was fine yesterday and even this morning, but I came home from work today and it looks like his tail was ripped or maybe bitten. I'm not sure, but I'm super worried about him. I was also wondering if it could be fin rot, but I just don't know. Any advice or suggestions would be great! In the tank I have guppies, mollies and play's (and one pleco).

You can try Melafix for the tail wound.

I haven't had guppy's in many year but if I remember right. Mollies like to fine nip on guppy's. Your tank is still cycling and por water can make it worst.

I wouldn't recommend doing any w/c at this time due to all the rain recently. Somebody already reported disaster due to high nitrate and ammonia in tap water. It's very sad that they lost a whole tank due to toxic in tap water.

Yep, you would find out as soon as the next day (if not earlier) if something bad happened.

With all the rain in Houston this week, I'm very reluctant to do a water change now. I'm using the carbon filter for RV that I bought from Walmart camping and RV section. I have 2 that I can connect in series, but I'm afraid it's still not enough. I'll wait until next week when the rain stops.

Don't look like the rain is lightened up next week. Oh boy!

Well darn. I bought some black sand for the brichardi tank and I wanted to start working on that this weekend. I'd like to try and get that done before I get my second batch of fry but it's not worth losing every one. Next week looks terrible too. I hate to skip my weekend cleaning. Ugh! Thanks for the heads up.

No problem. On a second thought however, you can test the tap water and see if it looks ok.

I stopped by an LFS today and they said they've been doing water changes all week including redoing all their lower ones. All My test kits are expired. I live in the alief area.

                        Have a Great Weekend.

I think LFS has a mega almighty carbon filter for their water change. I wouldn't take a chance. But it hasn't rained all day, so maybe it's okay.

Beth, I live very close to you and was wondering if you had done any WCs yet and what the results were? I was hoping to do one this weekend

The water co. put more chloramine after it rains. So it's important that your conditioner removes Chloramine not just chlorine. I use AmQuel plus as my water conditioner. I do my water changes ones a week rain or shine.
