It sounds like one of 2 things to me - fish that had a head injury or an electrical jolt. Since you give no indication of finding a broken heater or something similar, could the fish have rammed a rock or something? I know if I go in the fish room after the lights go out and I turn on a light some of the fish dart about very erratically and bump into things.

I have an in line heater so no possibility for and electric jolt. I though it might be a head injury but I wasn't sure if a fish could injure him self that bad where he would have head trauma.
