What was the sensitivity that you observed? Other than less spawning?

Heavy breathing, lethargy, a couple of deaths all in a span of 12 hours or less. Details are hazy now but testing the water then is when I found out my pH had dropped from the usual 7.6 and the rest of the fish recovered very quickly with just the addition of a pound of baking soda that I had in the freezer

That sucks but good info! I don't see myself testing water regularly unless I run into a similar aforementioned mishap. I'm not thanking you because you are a thank you hoarder. Thank you

              Huh?

Sunny, curious, what's your buffer recipe exactly that you use?

Sunny, was looking at that salt you use. On the HD website, it's considered a "Water Softening" Salt, used in water softeners.

                Am I missing something?

Hey rmalford, I use a buffer solution probably similar to what Sunny uses. I use a tablespoon Epsom, a teaspoon baking soda, and a teaspoon of instant ocean per 5 gallons. Keeps my pH right around 8.0

That is what I started using. Accidentally used teaspoon for all three first time around though. Oops!

Andrew, I buy 13.5lb bag at Sam's for under $7. That was after I did some shopping around on the net.

Does potassium bicarbonate have the same effect on kH? If so, that's what I'd use, just because plants can feed off the potassium, but not the sodium

No ill effects. Not even on cleanup crew. Still waiting on test kit to come in.
