  • Something interesting for a 2 gallon?

Giving a gift of a 2 gallon for father-in-law for desk at work. Is there something interesting that would work in that tank?

Shrimp are the best choice in a tank that size. Maybe focus on some interesting mosses and lower light plants and some variety of Neocaridina shrimp (Cherry, Yellow, Blue Velvet, snoball, ect.) as they do well without a heater and keep the bioload lower.

A lot of hobbyists keep and breed them, and many local fish stores carry a varying stock of them. Homeless Aquatics (in our sponsor section) usually has a great selection in stock. Knowing a general area you are located can help in directing you to a nearby store that stock what you might be after. Fish Gallery, Houston Aquarium Warehouse, Aquarium Design Group, and Houston Aquatics usually have some type of neo in stock and at least one or more types of aquatic moss.

HAW and ADG are both in that area and might have some neocaridina type shrimp, give them a call and check. The neos (shrimp) I would recommend are Red Cherry (or any variant, Sakura, Taiwan Fire), Yellow Shrimp, Snowball, Blue Pearl, or Blue Velvet (They are all very closely related and just depend on what color you prefer. They all like harder water and do very well in an unheated small tank) and Christmas, Peacock, Java, Flame, or Willow Moss would all work and do well with less intense light and no excessive additives. They would only need feeding every 2-3 days and a 1/4 water change once every two weeks with a small cup and occasional top offs.

They have a very low bioload. Depending on the footprint of the tank, probably up to 10. If you're getting a shrimp that breeds very quickly and easily, like red cherry shrimp (RCS), then 5-7 would probably be a good starting number.

Thanks for all the help. I had thought about getting back into shell dwellers myself but shrimp sound even more interesting!
