Chaeto of course depends on Nitrate.
Another thing it needs is light.
I had a ball of chaeto in my sump that stayed the same size for 2 years under a 60 watts shop light.
Two months ago, I put in a CF that is an equivalent of 100 watts. I split the chaeto into 2 lumps, 1 in a compartment under the light, the other lump in the next compartment.

The 1st lump doubled in size. The 2nd one stays the same.

I've got my cheato under a odysea 12" cf 50/50 light and just tested my water before my water change and nitrates are at 5ppm but not much growth on it

I spot feed it once in a while, I feed the whole tank a bunch. But you should have seen it when I got it. It was a rescue situation. It was about half the size and needing some TLC but I brought it back and its slowly making its come back.

I love the bio pellets. I am running Carbon, GFO, and Bio pellets. Probably stop the GFO soon just trying to control the hair algae.

Crazy thing recently happened. One of my Anthias switched sex. I started with two females and one male, and now I have two males and one female. No idea why this would have happened, it should have been the same as clown fish with the most dominate of the group being a male and the rest staying as females until the male is removed. Now they fight over the female at night. Its pretty cool to watch because their color patterns will change and it will look like they are moving.
