  • Helping one another| SKIlled Resources Technical Assistance Pool (SKIRTAP)

    Hi all...

After viewing the post of Htown and his kick in the gut of losing his fish in a blown circuit breaker to his garage situation, I also responded in an additional post about prevention, planning and looking for those weak areas that may cause so much frustrations that you want to get out of the hobby and never again do this.

In the post, some responses were made about electricians and others who have fantastic skills. People who help out when needed, offer their assistance and go out of their way to benefit others.

This got me to thinking.... I looked at Traci's picture of Hurricane Ike and the damages as well as other places that suffered.

The HFB forum is so unique in its flavor, scope, diversity and the wide range of people who come together with so many skills, assistance and abilities.

When some had some problems with possible home foreclosure, Thai (a lawyer) offered to help...
When some needed to move -- Many offered to help
When some needed electrician -- Many offered to help

and I am sure there are so many others that have contributed over the years, months and so much recently that it would be impossible to give credit to all those who have offered of themselves.

Soooo I mentioned to Traci an idea that had been floating around (bad pun) and suggested that this site could benefit from Professional people who are Skilled, Technical, with strong abilities to offer assistance to those who need such help.

If I lived in Houston, and needed an electrician, why not use one of the ones we have. If I needed a roof layer, a plumber, a carpenter, a handyman, carpet cleaner, veterinarian, lawyer assistance -- why not use those who can help and have a more personal touch.....

Now, I am not saying to abuse said people... Pay them - If they offer a discount, pay that discount and then donate to HFB the difference. The professionals and skilled technical people may offer their help at a very big discount or no discount, but still it would be a good work to use those who are forum members.

Its networking in a much more organized way, There are many times when the agony of trying to make a good decision on who to use can be alleviated by knowing a source personally.

Some may argue that the intent for commercialism is in this thought, but its not,,,, its more the thought of resources being not organized in an efficient manner that makes the lives of those who use this forum more difficult.

I would suggest that those people who would like to list themselves as potential availability to help in their specific field,,,, and what charges they would and what stipulations they would like........

So starting with such a potential data base of skilled individuals for resources that will help benefit this community is just another step and another way for the Houston Fish Box to show the way of helping one another in a very nifty community..

I can help with computer problems. I can even help without being in front of your computer in some cases...if you are willing to install a remote control tool.

I'm a welder by trade, although I don't do much welding these days. If anyone needs any type of welding done, I have several guys that work for me with welding rigs that can pretty much do anything.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

Most of my experience has been with high end automation. I know instrumentation & electrical controles. I designed, built & programed control panels for industry.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

                      Cool
Then consider a challenge, if you will?? My challenge would be a sensor that indicates when power goes off and texts the owner or uses a reverse answering machine to send a message to the people - when there power goes off more than say 45 minutes... the unit could be programed such that if a person worked near where they lived, then the power could be off for 45 minutes before alerting them.... If a person lived a long ways away,,, then the power could be off say ten minutes before alerting them.

Consider if you will, that this could be marketed also and patented just for fish hobbyist. If this idea takes off and you make some money... Then donate to the HFB or some other special needs..

Where were you when I was in 7th grade??? I have been either deaf or considered profoundly hard of hearing and do wear hearing aids. When I was in 7th grade, my math teacher taught using a blackboard -- I could not read his lips or blackboard. One day, I went to him early in the morning and asked him for help.... he asked what do I need?? I told him, I did not understand percentages -He stated; What do you not understand? I said... Everything... I just do not understand Our conversation went back and forth... Until I said this: Mr. K, If I knew what I did not understand, I would know how to do this but since I do not know what I understand, I cannot answer your question...... All hell broke loose... I got yanked and pushed up against a corner...... needless to say,,, Math was never something I could understand until I was 24 and in technical school and a special math tutor worked with me to get me to speed. Took almost two years...

Do take advantage of this man's help in motivating students, people, and others in these trying economic times when people may need to go back to school to get new skills and may require math..

                            Thank you for your kindness!!

In this day and age.... information referral is so extremely needed... Plus with all the fat / obese / overweight / and drinkers -- Diabetes is rampant.

Ma'am Maybe you can come up with a good questionnaire that will help those who may have not considered some healthy life style changes that will point them to the right direction.. Even if one person realizes that their lives are leading them to an earlier death or health issues - It would be worth it....
