  • Heater...

would a heater that is rated for much bigger tank used in a smaller tank have any side effects? so i took down my 34g, and i noticed the heater in it is a 250w, for all those year i thought it was only a 100-125, i was going to use that heater in my 20L (last all my tetras last winter due to no heater)...

that would be overkill on the watts in a 20L i think....and such a waste.

It wont make a difference.. the 250 watt heater will be on for a much shorter time span when heating up and you just have to make sure there is water flow in your tank.
Like fishlady said.. its a little overkill but it will not hurt you. I used to keep 200w heaters in my 20 and 29...

well, i am cutting down on the tanks... going to move in a few month, might cut down on that 20L as well around spring, but the heater was fine in my 34, all my tanks has really good flow, so i was wondering about the 20, i don't really want to buy anymore stuff, trying to save money to get stuff for the 150... if i do take down that 20l, the heater is going to end up in the sump for the 150

Jack - I run a 200w heater in my 180 and my 110... holds the temp quite well. I do see a degree flux here and there, but the fish dont care.. The tank does heat up during the day because the lights are on. by about 1 degree.
My answer is your 250 will work fine for the 150.
Do you already have all the parts for the 150 or are you still working on getting everything together ?

            What are you missing ?

only problem would be if the heater malfunctioned for some reason ... it could boil your fish.
              25g - Reef
              3.5g - Surge Tank
10g - Ichthyophthirius multifilis breeding colony

As noted by Cichlid; you have a problem faster with a large heater that sticks on.
Also , several larger heaters may stress your electric supply (if they are on at the same time). I found this problem years ago when there were separate heaters and thermostats (and an old house with limited electric supply). You could set a single thermostat to control several heaters in different tanks ; but they all went "on" together.
Although I have several tanks in an unheated garage "fish room" , I find the "recommended" wattage tooo high. In a heated home it is even more excessive ; unless you are breeding something at 85F.

+1, I'm with Mike and Jesper. I think a over rated heater is fine.

I would also like to add, you should really look into getting a temp controller. It's cheap on marsh. I see it go for 40-50 bucks. The temp controller will cut power to the heater if the heater gets too hot. My heaters are set at 78, my temp controller is set at 82. So if the heater malfunctions and goes pass 82 the temp controller cuts power to the heater. And if the heater goes below 82 the temp controller will allow power to the heater again.

So if I ever see my tanks at 82, then I know my heater is busted.

I have tempcontrollers on all my tanks. Can't have a 20 dollar hear kill 1k worth of fishes. The temp controller gives me peace of mind.
I ate my fish that died.
