  • Carbon bottles

For those that are looking I saw that Fish Gallery is stocking Carbon bottles for filling water.

    Believe they were.....
    $180 empty
    $240 filled with carbon

They felt pretty thin but IMO well worth it for those in areas with iffy water supply.

So thats $60 for them to change the carbon?  If that's indeed how much they charge then I have to get mine change.

I am not positive on the exact price but that was within a few dollars.

I am not sure how much they charge to change out the carbon....I change mine out myself.

Do you still need to treat the H2O when using carbon bottles or does the carbon absorb all of the bad stuff?

          Re: Carbon bottles

As I understand it, the carbon bottles are suppose to remove chloramine & chorline, you should be good to go, but test your water after your system/bottles are set up to make sure of your filtration success.

Great!  That makes doing water changes on a large tank a breeze.  Have you heard of people using total (or whole) home filters when filling their aquariums?  This is the large canister that is on the main water line to the house.  I was thinking of using one of these...

              Re: Carbon bottles

I personnally have not heard of anyone using home drinking water filter systems for filling their tanks....no....but it could be done if you did not mind replacing the filters faster/sooner.

You can use a small Brita system to obtain the same result.. problem is that one of those Brita systems will only do about 40-60 gallons...  so in my case after 2 smaller tanks are done, I am trashing my Brita and installing a replacement... at a cost of about $14 a pop.  Not a chance.

                  Re: Carbon bottles

These carbon bottles are normally used to filter residential water supply...meaning that they filter all water going through the house.

The are tall 2-3ft. and about 4-6" in dia. so they dwarf the little drinking water filters by far.

                    Re: Carbon bottles

Right, you are referring to the kind that Delock is using for his filtration system, that bottle is most likely good for at least a year I would guess, maybe more?

                      Re: Carbon bottles

Yes similar to what delock is using but not as big...what I was reading on the residential sites was that they were good for a year if not a few years but since we are using it to do water changes and not filter the water running through the house it should good for much longer.

Mike Senske of ADG stated that he has been using the same carbon in his for over 7yrs I believe and it's still working.

There is a lot more carbon is having to do in your tank vs. plain tap.

I remember him saying that at the ADG tour a while back...

I know in water that both the chlorine and chloramine will break down and be released as a gas given enough time... will they also be released as a gas from the carbon?
