  • question about female bettas

Do female bettas have a "beard" like male bettas, only smaller?

This sounds silly to ask to me, but I have a couple bettas I bought as females, but I have heard there are short finned males that look like bright colored females and these females are brightly colored...

I am wanting to breed my bettas so I am trying to learn what I can.  I am letting a male and female see each other (tanks side by side) and they are both showing their beards...

    Re: question about femal bettas

Where did you buy them at?

Sounds like you got two males.

Various places - not sure I even remember.

my betta female looks exactly like the one here.

I am not sure what the hanging tendrils from the fish are called.  They are longer in the male.  the females I bought all had a white dot in the middle of them, where my males don't.  However my females are all really aggressive.

The short finned males they are referring to are often referred to as Plakat's, I'm pretty sure on that, it's been a while since I had any bettas.  A picture of your bettas in question would be helpful.  Maybe PhishPhreek will drop in and help you out.

          Re: question about female bettas

I just visited a good website on betta anatomy.  They are definitely female.  Just not very friendly.  They have ovipositors clearly visible.

I will make a breeding attempt and see how it goes, the females behavior was just puzzling me, but the website says females do flare beards, just smaller ones.

If you haven't already been there, here's a link to PhishPhreeks site:

He has a lot of useful information posted, I found it very helpful when I was learning about Betta's.

I had that same question a little bit ago! I got a female from a friend, and she's quite the sassy one! I had never seen a female flare before.

Good luck with the breeding! Keep us updated.

I am planning on breeding a mercury colored halfmoon that has red accents in his fins with a beautiful all red female.

                      Re: question about female bettas

Went to the Betta Habari Auction yesterday and I heard one answer that might help with aggressive females.  Seems that they judge females on a flaring response just like the males.  This might be one reason for more aggressive females.  Also, Richard (?) of Betta Habari gave me instructions on breeding that included adding lots of live daphnia to the breeding tank.  A full belly might make the female less likely to fight.  Sorry I don't remember Richard's last name.

                        live daphnia?

                        what is that?

                          Re: question about female bettas

                          Kris,

Daphnia are small, mostly planktonic, crustaceans, between .2 and 5 mm in length. Daphnia are members of the order Cladocera, and are one of the several small aquatic crustaceans commonly called water fleas because of their saltatory swimming style (although fleas are insects and thus only very distantly related). They live in various aquatic environments ranging from acidic swamps to freshwater lakes, ponds, streams and rivers.

Here is the first pair I am breeding.

Male: Seshoumaru - mercury colored halfmoon betta - very iridescent and changes color depending on lighting.

Female: a lovely red I picked up from FG

I put them in a 5 gallon eclipse - with her in a hurricane vase, feeding them frozen brine shrimp.  I have heard I should put a styrofoam cup cut in half (in what way, in half to make a shorter cup or in half to make a half circle?) to give him something to stabilize the bubble nest...

He is doing a dance around where she is - flaring and such.
