  • Guppy help..

    hey all`
I have some questions about my guppies. How can you tell if your female guppy is pregnant? I have 3 tanks filled with guppies!  I cant tell if they are pregnant or just fat...lol I had a batch of fry from some I picked up at Petsmart...they are doing well in the grow out tank. It was unexpected but we were ready. Does anyone have pictures of what a pregnant female looks like? Ive been reading about them, they said se will show a dark spot? im confused where to find it....Thanks for any help I will post some pics in the morning of what I have...

There is a dark triangular spot just above the anus on the female fish.  If its dark she is carrying eggs.   IF very light then she is, either empty or just fertilized.  They turn dark as the young develop in their eggs.  When she delivers the babies the very thin membrane the young are encased in breaks open and the new born is released into your tank.

Also, if a female guppy is in the same tank as a male guppy, or was within the past couple of months, she's probably pregnant!

Guppies are always pregnant..........So ALWAYS assume they are unless they are newborn fry.

It might sound mean, but when I had guppies I kinda let natural selection have a hand, also. I made sure there were lots of live plants in there where the fry could hide, but usually a good deal of them were eaten by others in the tank, so not too many survived. Don't get me wrong, though, they still took over rather quickly!!

Why are you wanting so many guppies??

Do you have carnivorous fish you need to feed?

Ok cool. I was just making sure because I was thinking that was a lot of fish for just a community tank. Hahaha

You can tell a female guppy is pregnent when they're sides seem swolen and you see a very dark spot by the anal fin.
