  • How to make a wet/dry

Ok guys, i got the 55 gallon tank to use as a sump, and the 135 already has two overflows with a drain and return in each overflow.

The 55 gallon wasnt currently being used as a sump, or if it was it doesnt have any divider walls for different compartments. Maybe it was just being used for the extra water volume?

    Ok my questions;

How do you build a sump? How many partition walls should i put in the 55? What does each Chamber contain (bioballs/sponge etc.)?

What size pump should i get for the above setup?

Anything else anyone can contribute would be great. Like i said, ive never used a sump so this is the first time.

Depending on what you want out of it it's super simple!

Return pump IMO if for the tropheus I would shoot for about 900-1200gph. I have a mag12 on my 125g

Chris I see you are ready to get that thing started. I would go over to www.marshreef.com and ask the reef keepers how to do it. They would be the people with the most experience on sumps. Good luck man. Sending you a pm.

Id like to use it instead of a HOB or canister filter. So Biological and mechanical filtration.

You do know there is a difference between a sump & wet/dry system.

You could use both on either....tailor each for the purpose.

Re: How to make a sump?

I guess i really want a wet/dry, not just a sump. I guess a sump is just to make it easier and safer to add chemicals, do water changes and hide heaters etc.

I don't see how one would do much of a water change with the sump.....after a certain point it just stops.

I can do all the above with my wet/dry's sump

                            sump
                            –noun
                            1. a pit, well, or the like in which water or other liquid is collected.
                            2. Machinery. a chamber at the bottom of a machine, pump, circulation system, etc., into which a fluid drains before recirculation or in which wastes gather before disposal.

according to this definition my wet/dry is also a sump....but a sump is not a wet/dry.......so what's the big difference walter?

I think a sump is just a tank to add extra water volume and hide tank accessories.
