  • Flake Food - What kind you think is best and why ?

I went to Petsmart and bought some Aqueon Tropical Flakes on the recommendation of their aquarium expect.  He said its much better than Tetra flakes.  I was wondering if anyone else has tried it and is it better ?  What do you buy for cichlids (SA) ??

I wouldn't feed cichlids flakes cause ti would require a lot of flakes to make them satisfied.

That being said I prefer pellets....New Life Spectrum is the only thing I feed all of my fish and if I want to vary their diet I go with Hikari pellets or frozen.

your carnivorus fish require a higher proteen food than your vegi fish.
And your larger fish make less of a mess with pellets or sticks than flake.

I like Omega One because it has no by-products.  They make pellets too.  Even my puffer fish will eat the flakes and my knife fish will eat the pellets (some people have had trouble getting those kinds of fish to eat flakes/pellets-they'll only eat live/frozen).  I've never tried the brand you bought though.

I (well, my fish) have always liked Ocean Nutrition Formula 2 flakes, HBH Spirulina pellets, Omega One flakes (diff. kinds) and also OSI freshwater flake food. I tend to stick with those. Not sure about the Aqueon brand, I don't think I've heard of that before...Usually, though, when buying flakes I look at the ingredients first, and then apply that to the types of fish I'm going to feed. SAs would be carnivores, so look for flakes/pellets with more animal protein. Omega One always has a great mix of fresh fish and kelp.

P.S. I buy a lot of "algae," "veggie," and "spirulina" formulas but in actuality, they also have a lot of animal protein.

It's hard to say since I have only been keeping fish about 90 days now, but I do feed my fish a mixture of flakes, pellets, and frozen brine shrimp and or blood worms. They really seem to relish the frozen blood worms and brine shrimp. I think the fish I have enjoy a bit of everything, even the flakes of which I have three different brands.

I have used Mike Reed's flakes and Ken's Fish Food - both online suppliers for several years now - I also use New Life Spectrum for pellets, frozen I use San Francisco Bay or Hikari which I get through Foster & Smith - I buy a lot at a time  so their discounts and very cheap overnight shipping save me cash.

Over the counter flakes I have always liked Aquarian, when you can find them.
