  • Future of Houston Fish Box

While I have not been a member for years like many here, I have already found significant value in this forum.

I noticed more than two-thirds of the viewers online are visitors and not registered. It seems the majority of posts are related to classifieds.

First, to keep this a valuable forum, the visitors should not only register but should become active members. Imagine if no one started a thread or worse yet, no one posted. Where would we be as hobbyists? In a short period of time, I have met some great people on this site in person (and have also purchased items from the majority of them).

Everyone should try to restore the splendor of this site to its former greatness. Our moderators and site administrator have done their jobs. Now it is up to the rest of us to ACTIVELY participate.

Whether you are at an expert level or a beginner, I would welcome your comments. Even the experts do not have experience with every fish. We need your participation and input.

Mike I can't agree more. Most the people come look at the market threads. If they are having trouble with their tank. They run to pet/co or smart. to ask some one that knows nothing about Aquariums.
I found HFB when I was having water prob. I didn't find the answer but being very new to the hole PC interwebby thing. A few of the people here helped me learn how to look. Now Houston's water quality is something you can find on here. HFB has opened my eyes to what I can do with my Aquariums and more. As much as this site is about the care of Fish and other aquatic life. It is about the people who use it.

I completely agree! However, restricting guests access to the forums could deter them, which means we could lose potential members. For all of the buy, sell, trade boards, I think they should only be accessed to members with a certain post count.

Unfortunately, facebook kills forums. I don't like it, it's just the way it is.

Not only Facebook, but Google+ and Twitter as well, I hate it. But such is life i suppose.
regardless of that, I will always provide my forum to any fishkeeper that wants to join, and support this one as well.

I don't believe we should restrict visitors but rather we need a way to entice them to join and more important - to contribute.

I dont even require email conformation anymore, because i think it may deter some of the "want it now" generation.

I do use spam controls though, and never have many issues.

The way it is set up now is good. Guests can read but not see pictures. If the become members they can see everything. The smart people will find the site useful other will pass it by and maybe that's a good thing?

I like the way this website is designed. It is so useful when it comes to searching for certain topics. I like the way it is categorized into substructure. Though FB is more popular and more photo user friendly, FB is not as organized. However, I'm thinking that traffic on this site has been reduced lately.

it tends to go in waves i think. yes there was a lot more activity on here a year ago, and now the FB groups have more traffic. i try to keep up on both locations. i like the way the site is organized and it still has a wealth of knowledge. it is useful for the marketplace too and reach more people. i still post and reply on each area. like jughead said....not everyone will migrate to FB solely. there will be people who still rely on this site.

i agree it can be harder to find topics you need on FB since its just one gigantic wall without any categories really.

What ive found more than anything is that its just a bunch of random hobbyist, looking for quick responses to issues, and mostly getting helter skelter answers, but that seems to be what they want. Instant gratifiction, good, bad, or ugly.

I have always enjoyed the more family like atmosphere of real forums, and the possibility of long term friendships.

All i use those groups for is to attract members to my own forum.

Actually, its not just this site. Many that i have belonged to that had thousands of active members are now down to a very small handful.

Im unsure of where all the old timers have gone. It saddens me, and makes me wonder about the future of the hobby.

I'm a noob to the site but I've asked questions and/or have read others situation and helped me out... the one thing I think would help is an app so it's easier to access than having to go to the website and type all the info in. Just an idea maybe

I believe the administrator is looking at an upgrade. I don't know if it will include an app but it is a worthwhile comment.
