  • Feeding Bristlenose

Hey guys i have a question. Recently got some BNs for my tanks and was wondering what they eat? They have already cleaned off all the algae i had(did it in 1 night) and now i dont know what they eat, or if they do. I bought the algae discs but those seem to go untocuhed? Is there a special way to feed them. Should i assume they are eating somethign else in the tank(left over food?) They all look fine still, good color sucking on the rocks all day. They dont even hide that much.

    Any suggestions would be great.

If you just got them yesterday then they will probably need some time to get situated...after that the need to get accustomed to what you are feeding them.

What kind of algae wafers did you get? a lot of them have more fish meal then greens so read the ingredients. They will also eat zucchini, blanched spinach, romaine lettuce, bananas etc but make sure you prepare them well to rid of nasties.

They have been in there 3 days. The discs are Wardley's Permium Algae discs.

If i dont see them eat in a day or so ill try some greens.

      Thanks

I think Wardley's is one that is more fish meal and fillers then actual algae/spirulina

Mine will pretty much eat anything, but I do add some algae wafers to the tank every other day or so, after lights out, to supplement their diet.  I also give them zucchini a couple of times a month.  Just remember if you do feed them fresh veggies to remove the uneaten portions before they start to mess up your water (real techinical terms being used here lol)

              Re: Feeding Bristlenose

Mine don't really eat algae wafers, but zucchini, cucumber, and lettuce are pretty much destroyed. I've found that blanching the zucchini and cucumber helps to reduce cloudy water and the fish eat the peel more that I've started blanching.

HBH is a good brand as well as Omega, NewLifeSpectrum uses better ingredients and a lot less fillers then the others and they come in H20 wafers which will not foul water up to 24hrs.

My BN plecos also enjoy eating the sheets of dried algae/seaweed that are sold mainly for marine fish. Use a vegetable clip or magnets to secure it in place.

I'm obviously reading through old threads, but banana?? Would've never thought to give that to a fish. Think I'll try it.

Beth try cucumber. They will eat banana but it will foul your water fast.
