I have some wood I took out of my tank and was wondering how I should store it. I've got it sitting in a bucket of water at the moment because I wasn't sure if I wanted it to dry out or not; does that even matter? How do you guys store your decorative wood once it's been in a tank?

BTW, I have no idea what kind of wood it is; it's redish-brown, and smelled like chocolate when I sawed it in half before I put it in the tank...

In my 125 my water temp seems pretty low. Enin pointed out to me that there is bacteria that my fish will get if it's not high enough. I have a 200w heater but I'm not to sure if its working. I don't see any light that comes on when I plug it in. It's an aqueon heater set at 84 degrees but water still seems cool. How can I check to see if it works?

I just ran out of aquarium salt that I will pick up tomorro. I usually add alittle bit after water changes. My fish have all been scratching since friday. Do they have some bad bacteria already? They're still doing it now even though I did my 50% water change without adding salt.

What are those black flakes in my tap water straight from the hose? How do I get rid of it? Will it hurt my fish?

Help.....

First, I want to thank the forum for being so helpful. I have been studying tanks and have a few questions for you experts.

When I get the advice, most people based it on the size of the tank. However, I noticed that there are many different shapes to a same size tank. For example, some 55 gallon tank are 48"(L) x 13"(W) x 21"(H) or 36"(L) x 15" (W) x 24" (H)

What I like to understand is which tank is better?

Also, what does it mean when the tank is too small for the fish. I do not mean physically, like a 12 inch fish in a 10 gallon tank.

I have 2 Betta's (in separate tanks) and one gets super dirty a lot faster than the other one. They have the same tank, water, plant, rocks, marbles, filter...everything is the same in each tank. Why does one get slimy and dirty while the other doesn't?

We just picked up an aquarium on Craigslist to learn about fish with the kids.

It is a 30 gallons tank and it came with 3 goldfish (5 inch) and 1 cleaner (6 inch).

Since we know nothing about raising fish, how much food should we give these large goldfish? I know they can be overfed but I do not know the consequences of underfeeding them.

If all goes well (aka, these fish survives for a few weeks under our care), I would like to buy a few more fish for the tank. Looking for friendly easy to raise colorful fish. Any recommendations?

We live close to a Petco and Petsmart. A friend recommended against Walmart.

Ok, so last year I bought one of ADG's 8ft tanks, and had it set up in my house. Long story short- the plans I had for the room have majorly changed, and now I want it on the other side of the room (and not in front of the windows.... don't know why that seemed like a good idea at the time??)

Anyway, when they delivered it, they had this mini forklift thing to carry it with and to lift it onto the stand. I'd imagine I'd have to call and have them come out again to move the tank, but even just moving the fish is going to be interesting, because they're getting pretty big.

I figured with enough beer and food involved, I could possibly arrange for the lovely and strong men of HFB to come help me with this undertaking... (or to at least get it set up so the tank's ready to have the ADG people move it?)

Any thoughts/suggestions on how to do this? I figured I'd catch the fish and put them out in my pond while the move is happening... hopefully I'll have a few goldfish left :emt_eyecrazy: I've never had a tank this big before, so obviously I have no idea how to go about moving it
