I have been looking after, and breeding Betta fish for over 6 months now, and the learning process has been wild. I thought I would share a little bit more about what I know about feeding Betta fish, so any beginners can get a rough idea.

First of all, you need to remember how tiny a Bettas stomach is. It's no bigger than one if it's eyeballs. Only feed your fish as much as they can actively eat within a couple of minutes. Any other excess food will just add to the pollution levels in your tank, making the whole tank potentially dangerous for your fish.

If you are thinking about feeding your betta fish any fish flakes, then I wouldn't bother. Most bettas will not even touch the stuff. They are natural carnivores, so they love real fish food.

Frozen foods I recommend are blood worms and brine shrimps. They can only eat a couple per day, so don't go crazy with them. If you are looking to feed them pellets, then look for something with a high protein content. There is a good list of betta fish food here

Live food is another option, although it is expensive and hard to find. If you can find any live blood worms or brine shrimp, then you should definitely get them. However, if you only have a few fish, it may be a waste of time.

How often should you feed a betta fish? No more than twice per day. In my opinion, it only takes one feeding per day. Bettas are very sturdy fish, and can go a long time without food. Combine this with their small stomachs, and overfeeding can become a real problem.

In my opinion, Bettas are pretty simple to look after, and their food tends to be cheap and easy to find. You can find a big tub of pellets on amazon for less than ten bucks.
