  • Yes i know its because i use tap water but....

I have some what appears to be bubble algae. it stared as long air algae then i guess the nitrates or whatever made it grow over it.

My question is will a tap water filter like the one that u can get at Walmart help?

I know its not a RO/DI filter but i don't have 300 to drop on one of those.

Also i am currently without a license so driving to get water doesn't solve my issue.

    Its a 30 gallon shallow tank 2x2x1.

    thanks yall
Could use a dash of salt......

Tap water filter at Wal-Mart is only for chlorine. It won't help your situation. Get a RO/DI unit. There are some more affordable ones that aren't $300.

Saltwater aquarium reverse osmosis systems are an economical, convenient way to put consistently pure water into your reef aquarium without running to the store to buy RO or distilled water. Free shipping on all orders and orders placed before 3:30pm CST ship the same day.

      4 stage $129.99
      5 stage $159.99

              Mighty Mite 50GPD

This is a 4 stage portable unit that I was planning on getting. I prefer portable over those ones johnny posted where it's best used mounted to a wall.

Yes. It'll work much better than tap.

well i broke down and went ahead and bought a ro/di filter.

My nitrates shot up to like 130ppm and i pulled out the live rock with the hair algae on it and the next day it was like 20 ppm

Some aquaculture facilities, or even better LFS, will sell you R/O water by the gallon, which after awhile will add up to the cost of a unit of your own, but for now, that may help.
