  • 90P Reef

Thinking about converting 90P to reef. I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can get away with just live rock and live sand for bacteria filter? Can I just use a Eheim for Mechanical only w/ once a week WC? Thinkin SPS?

    Thanks

You can get by with Sand/rock for filtration with powerheads. Using an eheim would just raise nitrates if it wasn't thoroughly cleaned every few days. More of a hassle than anything. Find yourself a nice HOB Skimmer, or HOB refugium with skimmer and you'll be set. I run a skimmer and only use a filter sock for a day after water changes. Any other time I have no mech filtration and water is crystal with minimal debris.

And for SPS, they're even a lot of work for a sumped tank! Generally more equipment is required to handle SPS. I guess if you had a good HOB skimmer and a HOB planted refugium, you could get by doing SPS with weekly water changes. Not sure how HOB anything work on 90p tanks, never ran anything rimless myself, but I bet it's frowned upon
