  • Salt water idea

So I know I'm a bad member here but I think I have cooled off. I have a problem with keeping fish. I love salt water but it's just a pain in the butt keeping up with it. I have to juggle that and school. Changing water isnt that hard but having to drive and get it and check the chemicals is just time consuming. I love my nano reef now but I would like to in the future just keep a FOWLR tank or just a tank with a substrate and some salt water fish. I know I have asked this but can I keep a salt water tank with tap water? If not then how can I make it to were I can use tap. I'm not buying an RO DI unit.

You can .. but the tank will suffer, the fish will suffer and you wont be happy. I have a friend selling his ro di system for $75. Let me know

If you dont have time for a Salty tank, go back to freshwater until you have the time to care for it properly.

No point in doing soemthing if you're not going to do it properly.. just sayin.

I've seen tap work, I've had tap work...

You've already decided against ro/di so the only other option is tap.

I have seen tap work with FOWLR system, but the keeper was constantly battling algae. I imagine with the correct livestock and lighting it could be better managed and possibly eliminated. It will just take time and research.

Using tap will definitely give you some sort of algae problem. If its for a fowlr i think you'll be fine, as long as you don't mind some algae.

On a FOWLR system carbon filtered tap is fine. You shouldn't have to check params on your tank after its going. I never check params after the first couple of weeks.

I just pour water and add fish.

I don own any test kits and many new hobbyist don't know about it yet you always find giant fish needing new homes.

Fill that tank and post pictures.

On a high end system I might until its running. But after that no use. I didn't test my nano.

Oh and as a side note, a 26gal is definitely not a nano tank. Most consider nano tanks to be 5gal and under. Some may say 10gal and under.
