  • Local collection trip (North Side)

I'll be doing a local plant/fish/invert collection trip this Saturday at noon if anyone is interested in coming along. We can meet up at my place and there are a few spots nearby. I have some nets, but anything extra will always be useful. I'll also be doing some plant trimmings from my nano tanks/larger planted tanks.

I usually catch ghost shrimp (Paleomontes sp.), various snails (Ramshorn and pond), Gammarus (scuds), Pygmy banded sunfish, Golden killifish, blackstripe killifish, sailfin mollies, gambusia affinis, a variety of different plants from mosses to dwarf sag and some floaters. I usually always get a few crawfish and turtles, though most are far too large to keep. It all just depends on the trip really. If anyone is interested in anything very specific I usually know where they are found as I have a few dozen different spots and some are more common in certain areas then others. I'm just going for some ghost shrimp and general fun, so I'll be trying to help catch whatever anyone wants.

Here is a great website that pictures locally collected natives and where he found them.

Didn't happen. I got a tour, a lot of plant trimmings and plants along with some RCS! Thank you again Roy and Sasha for the tour of the tanks and for the plants! Very impressive puffer and nano tanks loaded with plants. I'll update the nano thread with photos with the plants in after I add everything!

Just curious on how you catch the fishes. Do you use a cast net? Do you ever use bait traps?

I usually just use large dip nets, though occasionally I can use cast nets or seines. I have never used fish traps myself.
