              oily surface when mixing salt

Skim the top off and throw in a power head. If it doesn't look oily, it should be fine. In all reality it's probably just dust.

what was originally in the container?
39g Crypt/ anubias, wild shrimp and minnows.

55g Reef- first salt in many many years, coming along. Looking great, and stable. Garden mix of soft/lps corals. DIY refugeum

20g Reef- different than the first by design.

That is just un-dissolved salt. I bet you have a white film sticking to the wall of the container as well. Don't worry about it, just do not add it to your main tank.
