  • Astrea snail detached from shell

So I have an Astrea snail that had a large shell, I'm guessing it was rather heavy cause it would dangle when upside down, anyways it fell one day and so I picked it up and moved it to some live rock. It never moved for three or four days. I thought maybe it's dead from falling upside down but a day later I noticed a slug looking snail slide by on the glass. Is it odd for an astrea snail to leave it's shell behind and will it grow a new one? It still roams around eating off the glass like nothing is wrong.

Mine did this for a week or 2 acting like nothing was wrong. Later he finally got back into his shell. I'm guessing they aren't the sharpest tooth in the piranhas mouth!

That's so crazy. I didn't even know snails could do that. Thanks! Lol

You'd think that's unnatural cause predators. But I guess like you said, not the sharpest. Haha

I've been checking out your predicament on a few SW forums and I keep coming across the fact that snails can't reattach themselves to their shells once it comes off. Their shell falling off can be caused by many things leading to the snail twisting themselves. It doesn't grow a new shell and can live normally without the shell as long as there are no predators that will feed on your vulnerable snail.

Also came across this. A few people thought their snail detached from the shell, but instead it was a stomatella and they later found that the snail never lost their shell.

Well thanks for the info. I'm not sure but it does look like the Astrea snail but I guess as long as it's not a bad thing or bothering anything I'm fine with it. But I always appreciate the knowledge being shared. Have to learn some how.

Finally got a pic. I'm almost positive it's the Astrea snail cause his beady little eyes.

That's his shell in background. I swear he even turned and looked at it and kept rolling. Lmao :what:
