  • Wine Barrel Pond

    From dream to reality...

It holds about 40 gallons of water. Filteration is in the form of waterhyacinths. Current inhabitants:
    1 Red Cap Oranda
    1 Black Moor
1 Ryukin Red / White Fantail
    1 Calico Oranda Fantail
    1 Red Oranda Fantail
    1 Red / White Fantail
    1 Mutt Fantail
    1 Orange Faintail
    1 Pond Snail
    2 Tadpoles
I know it is overstocked, but I could not help it. If they grow real big, I will give some away and eventually go down to 4 fish.

looks good, did it come ready to hold water, or did you have to attach a liner on the inside?

It gets about 4 hours of direct sunlight a day and is about 18 inches deep. It really does not get very warm.

It is a real wine barrel, so it may have held water, but it also had lots of wine pigmentation (and smell) in the wood. I really bought way to much liner and used black silicone. I think the silicone rim really adds to it, it looks like tar.

Looks good, but I think it is overcrowded (I don't know how your water temp is not > 90+. Don't let the enviro police see those water hyacinth.

And I am in Louisiana (but frequent the Houston LFS from time to time)

I don't remember the brand name, but it has adjustable output. I got that using store credit, so I wasn't too picky.

I had one similar for years and it held water with no sealant or liner at all, just soaked the barrel well before adding anything other then plants.

The ryukin died, but I think it was sick. The snail climbed out and dried up. Other than that, they are doing fine. Thanks for asking.

My complex is being pressure washed over the next few weeks, so I brought the fish inside. Now you can actually see their sides.

Since I don't change the water in my pond, my fish don't grow. So I am now only going with large fish...

and finally a decent shot of the Ryukin...

Are those the same fish pictured above the recent post?

Catch that white headed oranda out and post some pictures of it! It looks like a stunning specimen!
