What camera can you recommend (manufacturer/model) and where is the best place to buy it for the lowest cost?

    Nikon D60 with nikkor macro lens 60m/f2.8 - F

Make sure it's the newer macro lens with auto focus built in.

    Good luck.

Depends on condition of the body of the camera and how many clicks it's been trough.

I recommend a used body if cost is an issue. $300 is a fair price I think.

Regarding lens, it's one of the top lens on the market. I would buy brand new to get Nikkor warranty on it. Cost should be around $500. Lens will hold value over time better than a camera body. Plus, if you are really into DSLR you can upgrade the body later and use the same lens.

If you like real stores and touching stuff before you buy it then try the camera exchange on Richmond. They have used camera, lens, and flashes.

Again, if cost is an issue try the internet. Maybe ebay.

I do have to admit, if you want the best looking pictures you need wireless flash.

But Fronts are slow moving and you may not need as much light as in other applications (like taking pictures of tropheus).

I am with Thai on this one.
Get a DSLR body so you can upgrade if you wish later down the road..
A good Macro lens is needed to take pictures.
I am a Canon user. I would recommend any of the Rebel line, just be happy with it.. you will have to spend the money on the lens. Check craigslist and see if there is anything less expensive out there than new. Some people will sell whole setups for cheap...

Yes I agree, from time to time I do see good deals on CL.

Ron, you should also looking into remote/wireless flash.

This is the best way to bring out the outstanding colors in your fish.

Shooting with vs. without wireless flash makes the world of difference.

Ron if you are looking to purchase used cameras and accessories the absolute best place on the web is Keh.com ( http://www.keh.com/ ). I have purchased from them before and their grading system leans to to the extreme. I have bought equipment they called fair that looked like new.

+1 on Nikon. I have the D40 and love it. Many of the same features as the D60. The real challenge is flash and glare. If you turn the flash off, you get the blurred effect from fish in motion. Over time, you will learn how to adjust the F stop to compensate. I still haven't mastered it, but it isn't because a camera problem. Just takes some time to learn.
