Hit Academy up. They have a "Maverick" 12 ga. for like 189. For a little more get a Mossberg.

Good price. For home defense get one with a 18 to 20 inch barrel.

The Mossberg 500 Persuader is a good buy at $289.00. It comes with the 18" barrel and swappable pistol grip.

            home defense ammo:

            Highlights:
            The Firearms Tactical Institute reports:
"Number 1 buck is the smallest diameter shot that reliably and consistently penetrates more than 12 inches of standard ordnance gelatin when fired at typical shotgun engagement distances. A standard 2 ¾-inch 12 gauge shotshell contains 16 pellets of #1 buck. The total combined cross sectional area of the 16 pellets is 1.13 square inches. Compared to the total combined cross sectional area of the nine pellets in a standard #00 (double-aught) buck shotshell (0.77 square inches), the # 1 buck shotshell has the capacity to produce over 30 percent more potentially effective wound trauma. In all shotshell loads, number 1 buckshot produces more potentially effective wound trauma than either #00 or #000 buck. In addition, number 1 buck is less likely to over-penetrate and exit an attacker's body."

A 12 gauge #1 or #0 Buckshot load at close range is roughly similar to 12 –15 simultaneous hits from a .32 ACP to .380 ACP round, and that makes for impressive one-shot stoppage.
            215g Malawi Peacocks and Mbuna
180g Tropheus Ikola and Bemba and Clown Loaches
58g Bristlenose breeding and grow out

Still might be flirting with legality if you ever have to use it. Semantics, but you know how defense attorneys are. You might win, but it will cost you time, money, and energy.

Under the National Firearms Act (NFA) it is illegal for a private citizen to possess a sawed-off modern smokeless powder shotgun (a barrel length less than 18 in. or 46 cm and an overall length less than 26 inches) without a tax-stamped permit from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which requires a background check and a $200.00 fee for every transfer. However, if the weapon was manufactured by a licensed builder, with a short barrel and no stock, the transfer fee is $5. [1] (Short-barreled muzzleloading blackpowder shotguns, in contrast, are not illegal by federal law and require no tax-stamped permit, although they may be illegal under state law.) As with all NFA regulated firearms, a new tax stamp must be purchased before every transfer. Inter-state transfers must be facilitated through a Class III Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) dealer while intrastate transfers may be between two persons.

So does the barrel length include the choke or not ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

steve, this sounds cool until you remember the fact that friend/family are sleeping in the next room and #1 will easily go through sheet rock.

18" is legal, its the same gun i have. if you shot anyone reguardless of the gun you will have to go to court, even if it is self defense or breaking and entering.
