  • Noob looking for "guild"

note: I play alot of World of Warcraft, sorry

Ok so I was directed here by a very nice guy on The Planted Tank forums. He said there were a good bit of houston-based clubs and whatnot so I figured I'd check things out.

    About me:
22-married-female (Hes my legal HUSBAND, not a boyfriend lol!)
Laid back, when Im not super excited about somthing.
Was homeschooled since 7th Grade and recieved my GED at the age of 16. Used to be part of the HGMS.
Started work at the age of 13 at LFS's. (parents consent)
Studied a TON of Ichtheology growing up. (Had a bit of memory loss after the army. :/)
Looking to branch out, get out of my room and meet some intelligent people face-to-face. (Have REAL friends)

    Aquarium History (Home):
+Set up my 1st 75g SW Predator tank @ 13. (Disabled for the last 5 years)
+Set up a 20G long community Tank @ 13. (Disabled 5 yr ago and lost or sold it)
+Help dad keep/set up his 180?G SW Reef tank @14. (Disabled for the last 5 years)
+Changed the 75g SW to FW African Tank after loosing 100% of the stock @ 15. (Neglect, I had to leave for a month and the folks kinda...forgot about them. >_>)
+Took everything down 2 months before my 18th birthday due to me moving out, and not being around to maintain/take them with me. Those tanks have been inactive or sold since then.

That said, I'm VERY interested in FW Planted Tanks at the moment. I just set up a 20G on Dec 10th, and have some java ferns and moss in there right now w/pond snails and a betta. Its a lil sad lookin, but hopefully I can get more plants after xmas. Id prefer to get them from local people instead of Petco. Id even travel into Houston for reputable LFS or swap meets.

Not sure if this is the "guild" for me, but I am interested! ^_^
    Love, Kitty

ps-sorry its so long-winded, I get excited sometimes

Glad you found the HFB! Like other's have said, Welcome!

Sounds like you'll fit in well here, and it won't be long before your 'virtual' friends become real, face-to-face friends. I know that I met some of my very best friends here on HFB. Over time, you'll meet people for various reasons. These are the most helpful, selfless people I've ever had the honor of knowing. I consider myself blessed ever day. <Okay, enough of the mushy stuff...lol>

Unfortunately NASH (a planted tank club) recently dissolved, but GHAC and HAS both are local aquarium clubs and have events/meetings at least once a month. Keep an eye on the calendar and threads for details on when and where. I know for sure that GHAC has some plant-centric people who attend meetings on a regular basis. And more often than not, you can pick up plants during the raffles at the GHAC meetings. Or pre-arrange to meet someone there and get some plants. Just post in the meeting thread (when it appears) what you are looking for and I'm sure you'll get some offers to hook you up. HAS also has some of the best and brightest in the hobby and I'm sure they would welcome you with open arms too.

BTW - I'm going to move this thread to the Welcome forum so more people will know to stop in and say Hi. :)

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

                      Welcome to HFB!

I'll echo imagirlgeek and say that I too have met some of my best friends here on HFB (as well as the love of my life - I know, eww, mushy! ).

We've got some great aquarium clubs here in Houston. HAS is FULL of long-time knowledge and is the oldest aquarium society in Houston. All of their events are also posted here on HFB in their forum. And the GHAC was created out of the desire that HFB members had to get together monthly to see all our friends we've made here on HFB! All GHAC events are also posted here in the GHAC forum.

You've come to the right place!

You are in the right place. Just start posting your questions.

I recommend posting your plan before you buy. The experts will weigh in with ideas and occassionally offer free stuff.

No such thing as a stupid question.
