Nikon D700 with Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lens

            1/100s @ f/1.8, at ISO 3200

Thats why I decided to go full frame FX sensor, for the low light and excellent noise control at higher ISO settings...ISO 3200 and it still looks good. Excellent camera, and SO much to learn about it.

F1.8 is a monster. You could drive a bus through there. NICE.

Since the discus are slow movers you could probably try dropping to 1600 @ 1/60 and decrease your noise that much more too.

I need to get one of those lenses.........

Both the Nikon and Canon 50mm prime lenses are excellent lenses.
I know for the Canon the 50mm F1.8 is cheap too (less than $100), and the F1.4 is about $300... I dont know the price on the Nikon but I imagine somewhat in the same neighborhood. An Excellent lens to have in your bag.

You're right...thats a good idea I havent tried that setting yet. The camera has an auto ISO feature where you can put in your max ISO and minimum shutter speed, and it keeps the ISO in your parameters.

I have it set to max 3200 ISO and min 1/100 shutter speed. Ill try the 1/60 and see if it will shoot at 1600 ISO at that light level.

It really was dark in that pic, I only had 72 watts of light over the middle of that 210g 7ft'er and that shot was taken in the far right corner. I'm impressed, I thought it would look really bad. Next time I'll try to remember to turn on my other two bulbs in the fixture...lol I forgot I had a midday setting to run 4 bulbs at once and didnt even think about it.

Basicly the same deal for the Nikon...the 50mm f1.8 at $120 is a bargain IMO. The 50mm f1.4 is almost 3 times the price. My friend has one he said I could test out, Ill probably take him up on the offer...but they say you lose a little sharpness at those levels anyway so Im not sure its worth it but Ill check it out.

The nice thing about a 35, 50, 85 prime lenses is that they usually do not lose much of anything compared to zoom lenses because you have build a zoom lens with compensation to where it looks the best at all zoomed ends... 50mm.. no compromise.. just no zooming...
