  • Swordtail Fry

My Neon Swordtail dropped about 30 fry two weeks ago in my heavily planted 24g tank. They are swimming with impunity now and are starting to show color. How long until they can be sexed, and when will the males develop their swords? I want to plan when I can give them away but I want to keep a breeding group of 2 females and 3 males in this tank.

I would think as long as you keep them in waters that are in the mid 70's that they will mature in 6 months. Their lifespan is about 3-5 yrs

Sexing can be done at 2 months....1.5 if your used to looking on a daily basis...like me. They can breed just about as soon as they can be sexed but usually isn't until about 4 months when they can actually drop fry. Anyhow...Congrats! Always nice to have babies in the tank, and glad to hear they are swimming around and coloring up good...I may want a few later for my community tank/s..

I'll save some for you! I'm keeping an eye on them daily esp. for gonopodium development. They are starting to dart around and play with each other too.

BTW, my females gravid spot is getting dark again...

They are at about .5" now. When will they be ready to go to good homes?

                  1.25" +/-
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Phish is right if you are sending them to a LFS...but for a new home to a friend, I get fry all the time. So I get them as small as 1 week old sometimes. Really it only matter as to who they are going to, and what else is in thier new tank as tank mates.

lilmiss: I'm still saving you some. Just let me know how many. Would you be willing to trade them for some of your peacock endlers. When will you be back in Houston?

Ooops , I saw the title of the thread and thought it was a receipe for swordtails. I have a few dozen from the pond that I am wondering what to do with.

They started as red but after 4? years in the pond they are green. Some of the males have extra red through the center of the body. They look good but I doubt if they will pass on this trait .(I wasn't really going to cook them). I expect to be at the HAS Christmas Party and could bring some.
