They are best in groups, don't do as well alone.

I was thinking 3 would be a good number as long as they aren't $100 each. That's one of the reasons I wanted the SAP, they're sociable

No LFS has them. This is where I'm considering getting some:

You'll see it lists them (under Brazilian FW puffer) as not in stock. I called them and they do have them. I think the guy said they were something like $7.50 each.

Great find OrandaMan, this page may reignite my love for puffers. I have been looking for a place to get red eye puffers for a good price and they have them.

Be prepared for the possibility for overgrown teeth with the SAPs. Just something to keep in mind.

Been there, done that. But still a very prudent warning for anyone interested in any kind of puffer. I hate seeing puffers suffering cause the owner or LFS does not know how to take care of them in this aspect.

True...it can happen with any puffer, but some puffers are more likely to suffer from overgrown teeth, and SAPs are one of them. In fact, they are notorious for it. In the case of SAPs, it's not only negligence that could cause it, but just part of the package.

I have 2 fahakas, 3 dwarfs, had 2 avocados (1 has passed away), and about 18 - 20 SAPs. Of all these puffers, I've seen the overgrown teeth in 1 of the avocados, and a couple of the SAPs. And from personal experience, clipping their teeth is not a pleasant experience for the puffers or you. :) Just go into it with the expectation that you will have to do some dental work is all I'm saying. If it's not something you think you can handle, maybe choose another puffer type.

Maybe......but everyone would have to sign a waiver releasing me from all liability. Sedating a fish is tough.

How do you trim them? How do you keep from traumatizing them in the process?

You know algae wafers? It's the same idea, only with weed. Sometimes called a "Scooby Snack".
