They are in 100% houston tapwater
        temp 79 - 80 deg
        pH about 7.8
gH prob around 10 or so.

        They get fed flake.
The whole year last year i probably only have 10 or so babies hatch that i know of, and only 2 made it to adulthood.

In reading this is what I found and you might find interesting.
The lakes are tectonic made (ie like the rift lakes of africa)
          Their pH are around 8.0-8.2
          Temp solid 80 deg

It sounds like to me you are on the right track. Hopefully you will see more babies coming soon :)

I have some orange ones and some greens that I believe are that "S" word type... but I have yet to see any berried. However... I have had them for 6months+ and I still see many in the tank. Maybe they aren't as into reproduction as ghosts or the reds. Mine are in a ph of 8 and always around 82 degrees because of the cost of AC lol

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.
