What Tangs you keep in the past ?
Reason I ask is that I find tang's to have more personality than Malawi, but Malawi for the most part have more color except for when you get into trophs where I find them able to compete.

I would rather have a dull looking fish with a ton of personality, than a good looking fish with no personality.

If you go African (which is easy to do with Houston water) I would first suggest Lake Tanganyika then Malawi.

You have a wet/dry on it, from the sounds of it, so you are more than 75% the way to an awesome looking African tank :)

              tropheus, tropheus, tropheus

I know what happened with your last colony man but don't give up.

They are just the coolest fishes to me.

I can't vote or anything listed....

i had trophs in the past and i did like them when i had them but the just cost too much to do it right and money is always tight. i will prob get back into trophs after college but right now i dont have the time do them justice

See to me Discus are more difficult than Trophs.
You are obviously already used to water changes owning a Discus.
The biggest thing you just have to make sure of, is that trophs are herbivores so you have to make sure that the food you give them are not high in Protein. IE stick to NLS 1mm cichlid formula, or good quality flake, or Danishi.
I honestly think keeping trophs is not hard.. as long as you keep up with water changes, and feed them small regular portions.

The tropheus whisperer speaks wise words....

I have auto feeders on both my tanks.

I have my lights on a timer.

I have been away from home days at a time with no problem.

Just do a water change once a week with a carbon bottle and prime.

A lot simpler than Discus to me.

well it was the feeding. i wasnt always able to take the time to watch them eat. i had ocean nutrion veggie and nls 1mm cichlid and fed twice a day. i still managed to sscrew it up with a bad temperature water change. also discus are cheaper for me at least. i could get some cheap dubosi but i want specific trohps that tend to cost more and i have to order online.

auto feeder: I only use eheim.

discus are not bad fishes to have. They look nice. Just not for me. If you want to keep anything other than tropheus.....I would go discus.
